The 3rd Architectural Biennial Beijing 2008 INTERNATIONAL CONSULTATION FOR PLANNING AND DESIGN OF D· PARK 751 IN BEIJING INVITATION Conceptual Schemes co-initiated by the Organizing Committee of the 3rd Architectural Biennial Beijing 2008 and Beijing Zhengdong Electronic Power Group Co., Ltd., will form a base to a future Master Plan for the construction of D·park751,a Cultural Creative Industry Gathered Area in Beijing. International Architects are invited to question the current development patterns of D·park751 and to address the issues that the Development and Management Department has raised. D· park751 As a predecessor of Beijing Zhengdong Electronic Power Group Co., Ltd., factory751 was a national large-scale power enterprise which was built with the help of Democratic German in the 1950s.? According to the readjustment of Beijing energy policy, the gasworks under Zhengdong Group stopped operation in 2003.? In 2006, with the support of government, Zhengdong Group decided to make use of its old workshops and well-preserved industrial equipment and facilities to construct D·park751，the Design Park in Beijing. On 28th March, 2008, it was assessed as a Cultural and Creative Industry Gathered Area. At present, D·Park751 is under construction and has attracted some of the related studios with their designers resided in. (Pictures No.1-4 illustrates the preservation and renovation of industrial relics in D·park751) ABB2008 works with Beijing Zhengdong Electronic Power Group Co., Ltd to promote the development of D·park751. It takes “City/Construction: Ecology” as the theme and guidance. D·park751, which is located in the downtown area in Beijing, will be a living case to be analyzed and applied to the International Architecture. Also, it is chosen to host “International Consultation for Planning and Design of D·park751 in Beijing”. As the aim of the activity, the focus is to find out a solution to the rapid growth of the creative industry park in the industrial background. Moreover, through this activity, the advanced international technology and excellent management expertise will be gathered for the one globe management efficiency. All of them will provide Beijing, China, and even the whole world in post-industrial era with experience for reference that contribute to the sustainable development.  Picture No.1  Picture No.2  Picture No.3  Picture No.4 Contents Project 1: Planning and Conceptual Schematic Ideas of D·park751 (see the following picture) D·park751 occupies an area of 22,000 sq m. There are industrial boilers, huge gasometers, a network of pipelines and the old workshops as well. Designers are required to create conceptual schematic ideas for whole industrial relics in D·park751.  Project 2: The planning and designing of Three-Dimensional Transportation Network (also called Synthetic Pedestrian Bridge) (see the following picture) A synthetic pedestrian bridge will be constructed on the current pipes structure in the area. It will be more accessible to visitors and can link various parts of the park consistently. The three-dimensional traffic system should include pedestrian bridge, coordinate structures and destinations. Design plan should also elaborate on the function uses of coordinate structures and destinations, such as information, elevator, restroom, café and etc.  Project 3: Regional Design of gasometers (see the following picture) This region covers an area of 30,000 sq m. The two helical type gasometers have long been the landmark architectures of gas industry. With a height of 68 meters and an inner diameter of 67 meters, 1# gasometer has a planned height of 30 meters. And with a height of 57 meters and an inner diameter of 72 meters, 2# gasometer will be rising at 80 meter. Both of them have an estimated volume of 15,000 cu m. Find out your reconstruction design of this region, try to create a complex integrating fashion design, entertainment, performances, exhibitions as well as hotel.  Project 4: Concept design of desulfurization towers area. (see the following picture) There are 10 desulfurization towers with 60 m in diameter and 10 m in height in this area, covering 2,500 sq m. Though these equipments stopped operation in 2003, the lift machine here is still in good condition. The area is to be rebuilt into an exhibition hall for fashion or hi-tech goods and luxury. Designers can take the 2, 3 and 4 floors (with 1,500 sq m each) of the office building next to the towers area as a whole design zone.  Project 5: Regional Design of Equipment Building (see the following picture) This region occupies an area of 5,500 sq m, combined with old workshops such as the office building for the equipment department, the fitter’s workshop, the ventilation room and a gasometer with a capacity of 7,000 cu m.  Project 6: Concept design of Thermal Power Plant (see the following picture) According to the project of burning gas instead of coal, the coal- fired boilers and their accessories will stopped operation in Hengdong Thermal Power Plant (affiliated to Zhengdong Group). And there will be a 20,000 sq m area vacant for the development of Cultural and Creative Industry.  Project 7: Regional Design of the Coal Yard (see the following picture) With an area of 30,000 sq m, this region features a coal yard, 3 branches of the railway which will be soon out of service, industrial workshops and warehouses and so on. At present, the ancient steam locomotive and “double tower”, used to be the gas cooling plant, have become the new elements in this area.  Project 8: Light Design of D·park751 (see the following picture) Including the workshops, gasometers, boilers, pipes and other industrial facilities in D·park751.  Project 9: Architectural Design of the construction item (see the following picture) Choose any individual building in D·park751 to design.  Project 10: Building Facade Design of the Designer Building (see the following picture) Located in the center area of D-park751, the Designer Building occupies a total construction area of 48,000 sq m. It’s a six-story building with three layers underground.  Project 11: Building Facade Design of the Designer Hotel (see the following picture) Near the main west entrance of D·park751, the Designer Hotel is now being rebuilt from the original office buildings of Zhengdong Group and the Installation Company (the subordinate company of Zhengdong Group) and a garage. It covers an area of 3,500 sq m and the architectural area is about 4,000 sq m. It’s a five-story building with a couple of two-story wing buildings. The building facade design of the Designer Hotel is based on its structure and function.  See the brief material such as general layout plan, pictures in the attachments. Participants are required to choose one item or more to design. The design will serve as a blue print of the project before it is completed in 2010. The forms of planning and design include drawings, models or three-dimensional etc. Procedure Invitations will be sent to international architects and 10 will be selected based on their letter of interest and the assurance that a quality submission and presentation will be made within the deadline. The selected schemes will be placed on Exhibition in D·park751 during ABB2008. Registration needs to be confirmed by the October 1, 2008 by E-mail. The information of the schemes from participants then will be used in the ABB2008 Documentation Book and possible selections of the materials will be used in the Magazine as the supplement to the book. It is necessary that the digital work be sent to Organizing Committee of ABB2008 before October 10. The 22 to 25 of October are reserved for producing and mounting the schemes in D·park751 for the ABB2008. That the chosen architects can mount their works on the requested board size A0 (84*119mm) numbering 4 to 6 boards that will be given an exhibition space of 20 sq m. 9 am -12 am on October 26, the ABB2008 International Forum on planning and design of D·park751 will be held in the office building of D·park751. It is advised that the selected architects produce their work for the presentation and for debate in a Power Point Presentation Show. Remuneration The architects whose schemes are selected will be entrusted with the design according to the development of D·park751. (There will be a 20-squaremeter area free for selected schemes.) Special Exhibition for the selected schemes will be held during the ABB2008. The selected schemes, serve as the Architectural Art Literature are going to be abstracted in ABB(2008) Documentation Book. Emphasis Zhengdong Group is to select a scheme or more that will serve as a blue print of the project. The chosen architect or architects will be consulted and contracted to Zhengdong Group for the future realization of the scheme. This will be negotiated according to the out coming results and economic situation in D·park751. The organizer does not take responsibility except these problems.
