Ħù The National museum of China
The National Museum of China was inaugurated on February 28th, 2003, directly under the Ministry of Culture of P.R. China. Formed on the basis of the National Museum of Chinese History and the National Museum of Chinese Revolution, the National Museum of China is a comprehensive museum focusing on history and arts, systematically showing the long history of China. The origin of the National Museum of Chinese History is the Preliminary Office of National History Museum set up on July 9th, 1912. As the PeopleĦŻs Republic of China was founded on the October 1st, 1949, the Preliminary Office was renamed as the BeijingNationalHistoryMuseumunder the Ministry of Culture of the Central Government. Later on it was entitled as the National Museum of Chinese History in 1959. The National Museum of Chinese Revolution grew out of the Preliminary Office of National Museum of Revolution set up on March 1950. In 1960, it was entitled as National Museum of Chinese Revolution In August 1959, the construction of the main building for the two museums was completed, to the east side of TianĦŻanmen Square. On the October 1st of the same year, they opened to the public, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the PeopleĦŻs Republic of China.
The old building of the National Museum of China will go through renovation and enlargement from the year 2004 to 2007, expanding the floor space from 65,000İO at present to 150,000İO. At that time, the NationalMuseum will be equipped with a new set of modernized museum facilities. With proper qualified staffs, the museumĦŻs collection, exhibitions, and equipments will be upgraded to a comparable high level correspond with its status. The National Museum of China will be constructed to a world-leading museum comparable with the time-honored civilization of China. With the task of archaeological excavation, collection, research and exhibition, the National Museum of China systematically and comprehensively collect treasured antiquities of China which reflecting the Chinese history of ancient time, contemporary and modern times. Through the permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions, the National Museum of China presents and publicizes the spectacular history and magnificent culture of China, and introduces the brilliant world civilizations to the visitors at home and abroad. The museum also pays importance to study and research onto history, archaeology, antiquities, museology, so as to enrich and deepen peopleĦŻs knowledge and understanding of history and culture, and to improve the development of Chinese museums. The NationalMuseum will become an important public venue in the center of Capital Beijing for cultural recreation and enjoyment. The Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall is located in Qianmen Dongdajie. The site is east to the old Beijing railway station, and south to the Tiananmen square. This modern exhibition is rebuilt from an old building. The construction period is from September 2003 to May 2005. The exhibition was open to public in September 2005. After the reforming, there are 16,000 square-meters floor space to distribute on 4 floor levels in the Hall, with 8,000 square meters for exhibits. The 2nd Architectural Biennial Beijing 2006Ħ¤International small-town planning exhibition will set up in the west section on the first floor and the northwest section on the second floor, with 2,100 square-meters area totally. The Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall is designed to introduce the long history of the immortal city of Beijing, display the great achievements of the modern urban planning and development, and exhibit the splendid future of Beijing's urban development.
On the second floor of the Hall, there is an area about 1,000 square-meters to lay out the model of Beijing's city master plan with the scale of 1: 750. This model represents the status qua of Beijing city precisely. The Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall primarily features the past, present and future of the great ancient city of Beijing. It also serves as a platform for both domestic and overseas scholars to exchange academic ideas, as an education base of patriotism and morality for youngsters, and as a place to stimulate public passion for understanding and loving Beijing more and participating in the development of Beijing. Ħù The China Millennium Monument
At the turn of the century and millennium, the China Millennium Monument. with its oriental cultural overtones and contemporary architectural art, will promote the national spirit by embodying an original style, displaying a modern aestheticism, and expressing hopes of the future. The China Millennium Monument, as China' s symbolic and commemorative building to welcome the Year 2000, is a gift for the world of the 21st century from the Chinese people, forever standing in China' s capital Beiling. The China Millennium Monument stands along a north-south axis between the Military Museum and the Central Television Complex, with the scenic Yuyuantan Park to the north and the West Beijing Railway Terminus to the south, occupying an area of 4.5 hectares and a total floor space of about 42,000 square metres. The Monument is a grand structure ingeniously combining the spirit of traditional Chinese culture with modern architectural art, and integrating architecture, landscaping, sculpture, mural painting, and various other art forms. It will not only be an eternal memory of the turn of the millennium, but also serve as a centre for cultural, artistic, and scientific exhibitions both at home and abroad, as well as an inspiration in patriotism.
Inside the southern entrance to the Monument is the Plaza of Holy Fire, one metre below ground and 960 square metres in area, standing for China' s vast territory of 9,600,000 square kilometres. With the gentle centripetal rise of the ground suggesting the rise of the Chinese nation, the Holy Fire of China is located right in the middle of the Plaza. The fire originated at the site of Peking man at Zhoukoudian, Beijing, and is fed on natural gas. The everburning flames, rising some 45 centimetres high, are a token of the unceasing creativity of the Chinese civilization. Along both the eastern and western side of the plaza, there is a steady current of water cascading down the steps, reminding the visitor of the mother rivers of the Chinese nation: the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers.
